3 Different Kinds of Bikes for General Use

You can buy a bike for almost every purpose imaginable but a simple utility, hybrid, or folding bike will still increase your fitness, save you money on fares, and make no negative impact on your environment.

As long as the bike is of good quality, you will only need to keep it clean and check it regularly for signs of wear.

Hybrid bikes, utility bikes, and folding bikes are all dependable machines that are suited to commuting to work or school, day-to-day transport needs, or simply a pleasurable ride in the park or even the countryside.

The Hybrid Bike

Lightweight materials combined with road bike performance and hardy mountain bike technology make hybrid bikes perfect for bumpy urban roads. They are ideal for commuting, family rides, fitness riding, touring, and carrying luggage.

The Utility Bike

Utility bikes are ideal for local commuting and short rides. They are equipped with fat tyres that absorb road bumps but will drag on long journeys, making them hard work to ride and uncomfortable.

The Folding Bike

Ideal for commuters, and for people with little space in which to store a standard bike, folding bikes can go anywhere, especially on public transport. The folded bike can be easily reassembled into a serviceable machine without the use of tools.

Tip: For urban commuting, our suggestion is to use lightweight hybrid. With its head-up, traffic-friendly riding position and easy-to-operate gears, the lightweight hybrid is ideal for urban commuting.

Bike Safety for Children

Riding bikes is a good way to pass a Sunday afternoon in the park or along trails in your neighborhood. It is fun for the entire family. Keep your children protected while they ride their bikes with you or with their friends.

Wear safety gear. Fatal injuries sustained in bicycle accidents are due to the rider not wearing a helmet for protection. Helmets come in all sizes and colors so they can be stylish for the discerning young rider. Helmets should fit the child without being too snug. A loose fitting helmet could turn during wear and block the child’s vision leading to an accident. Children should wear elbow and knee pads as well. This is especially important for a new rider who is not completely comfortable with their balance on a bike. Sandals and other open toed shoes should not be worn during bike rides. Any shoe that has a slippery sole that cannot grip the pedal should be avoided. For children’s bikes, the brakes are controlled by pushing the pedals backwards. Improper shoes may prohibit braking which creates a dangerous situation for your child. Safety gear should be worn each time the child rides their bike.

Make sure that the bicycle is adjusted well for the child. The child should be able to reach the handlebars without leaning forward. Leaning forward puts undue strain on the lower back. The bicycle seat should be tightened to where Continue reading

Nuvali and Reverse Upak To Cardiac Newbie Ride

The ride was planned for almost three weeks. The flight date was set on June 30, 2010 to coincide with the inauguration of the new President of the Philippines P-Noy and Vice President Binay. It was Kay who initiated the ride since June 30 was declared a non-working day.

A total of 8 brave souls answered the call. There were three trail ride first timer in our group so we opted to conquer Nuvali trails since the trail there is not hard to maneuver. We also had planned, with the aid of Etong (our trail master of the day), to go to Matang Tubig. According to Etong, this is where the water source of Sta. Rosa is coming from.

The three newbies rented out their bikes from Sabak, a local bike shop located at Paseo de Sta. Rosa. The weather was good when we started the ride at past 8AM already. It was cloudy and gloomy.

Muddy Night Trail Ride

My biking buddies were all geared up and well prepared.

The planned to conquer the darkened depths of Sta. Rosa-Silang trails  was set a week before.

The day of the scheduled night trail ride came. There I was, still contemplating If I will join or not.

The reason? I’m not prepared. I don’t have even just a single light which is the most important tool in a night ride, not even a blinker!

Hitting Nuvali Using Men’s Health All-Terrain RACE 2010 Trails

Yesterday, my brother-in-law, a couple of friends from Quezon City and I were supposed to do a quick ride along Sta.Rosa-Silang trails (Paseo de Sta. Rosa, SouthForbes, Cardiac Hill, Bukuhan, Holy Trail, Website, Coffee and Upac). Unfortunately, our friends from Quezon City informed us at the last minute that they can’t join us because they woke up late.

If there’s one thing to bring on your ride is the tool to be able to change plan at the last minute.

In spite of this scheduled ride (it was planned the previous night), only two of us showed up but the show must go on so we decided to continue the ride.

My brother-in-law and I decided to follow the trails in Nuvali that the Men’s Health All-Terrain used.

Since we will use the Nuvali trail, we need to get permission and sign a waver from the Administrator. What’s good thing about Nuvali, is that runners and bikers are very welcome on their subdivision. They actually even allocated a path both for the runners and bikers.

All you need to present is an Identification Card (ID) and make sure that you are full-geared, most specially you are wearing your helmet when presenting yourself to the staff of the Administration.

After signing the waver and logging our name on the Biker’s Log, we were all set to go.

Below is the map of the trails.

After the surprise rampbridge (see the circle in the middle of the map), there’s another guard house (going into Montecito) where we signed another waver.

It was published that this is only a 16KM ride but my cyclocomputer registered a total of 20Km. It took us almost 3 hours to cover the whole trails because we had some long ‘water and chocolate breaks’, and picture taking too courtesy of my brother-in-law. I’ll post the pictures later. We were just familiarizing ourselves with the trails because we planned to bring some friends here and we also have some plan in the future to ride it at night.

For all bikers out there, try the new Nuvali trail NOW…Yes, now because I’m sure it will be gone into oblivion once the rain comes just like with the previous trail that was used on 2009 Nuvali Dirt Weekend race.
